# Pier to be stabilized By Daily Press staff

The city has launched a multi-year program to rehabilitate and restore the Santa Monica Pier.

In an effort to ensure safe access to the pier by delivery vehicles and emergency equipment, a lane of steel plates has been installed as a means to equally distribute the weight. The plates were recommended by the city engineer and the city consulting engineer. The plates will remain in place for about nine months while the first rehabilitation phase is completed.

The pier’s normal weight limit of 10 tons will remain in effect during the rehabilitation program. Heavier loads and deliveries will be directed to the 1550 beach parking lot.
