Boarding for Breast Cancer will celebrate its 30th anniversary this month by sending hundreds of riders dressed in pink down the Southern California coast, with the nonprofit aiming to raise $100,000 at its biggest fundraiser of the year.

The 19th annual Skate the Coast, set for Saturday, Oct. 24, is a 15-mile skate, bike and roll from the [Santa Monica Pier](https://www.smdp.com/off-the-hook-seafood-festival-returns-to-santa-monica-pier-marks-route-66-centennial/) to Dive N' Surf in Redondo Beach. The event typically brings in close to $75,000, said Lisa Hudson, co-founder and president of the organization, known as B4BC.

"Reaching $100,000 would be an incredible way to celebrate three decades of this work and help us carry it forward," Hudson said.

Money raised supports B4BC's year-round breast cancer education, prevention and survivorship programs. The 501(c)(3) nonprofit promotes early detection and a healthy, active lifestyle as the best means of breast cancer prevention. The ride falls during October, which is recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Hudson said the event grew out of the group's roots.

"We were founded in 1996 within the action sports community, so bringing people together through skating, biking, movement and an active lifestyle has always been at the heart of what we do," she said. "What started as a grassroots ride has grown into one of our most meaningful annual traditions."

Skate the Coast is the sister event to B4BC's 22nd annual Skate the Lake in Lake Tahoe. Over the past 20 years, thousands of people have taken part in the organization's skate series, and B4BC has raised more than $1 million for its initiatives.

On ride day, participants will board a shuttle at Dive N' Surf at 7:30 a.m. for the trip to the starting line at the Santa Monica Pier, where B4BC will send them off at 9 a.m.

"The Santa Monica Pier is the perfect starting point," Hudson said. "It's such an iconic part of Southern California and gives us this beautiful backdrop to bring together the ocean, the action sports community and our mission of healthy, active living."

Riders will stop at hydration stations at Blauer Board Shop at 10 a.m. and at Marina del Rey Parking Lot 5\. At 11:30 a.m., the group will reach Dockweiler State Beach, where those who want to ride only the final 7 miles can join in. After a last hydration stop at Noble Park, participants will finish at Dive N' Surf to a cheering crowd.

A finish line party runs from noon to 4 p.m. with food from Wahoo's Fish Tacos, music, drinks, awards and a sponsor village, including vitamin C samples from presenting sponsor LivOn Labs.

Hudson described the ride as a day packed with emotion and energy.

"Hundreds of people in pink moving together along the coast, with the ocean beside you — there's music, laughter, cheering and lots of high-fives, but underneath it all is a powerful sense of purpose," she said.

She called it a day about community, purpose, remembrance, gratitude and nature.

"It's not a race — it's a collective push for prevention," Hudson said.

The event is open to riders of every age and ability, including skateboarders, cyclists, roller skaters and scooter riders.

"If you're on wheels, you're part of the crew," Hudson said.

Registration requires a minimum $50 donation and includes an event T-shirt, a goodie bag and raffle tickets. Riders earn 10 more raffle tickets for every additional $100 they raise, giving them a chance at prizes from event partners. Participants can fundraise as individuals or as teams.

Those who can't attend in person can register as virtual participants, ride a local trail or path and post a photo on social media tagged @b4bc and #SkateTheCoast. B4BC will pick a photo contest winner Monday, Oct. 26.

The weekend kicks off Friday, Oct. 23, with a registration party and 30th anniversary celebration from 3 to 8 p.m. at Firestone Walker Brewery in Venice. The party is open to the public and will feature event registration, breast health education, live music, a silent auction, raffles and cold drinks.

For many riders, Hudson said, the day is a way to honor someone they love.

"Whether you're rolling in memory of someone you love, celebrating survivorship, supporting someone on their journey, or simply showing up to be part of something bigger than yourself, there is a place for you in our B4BC family," she said.
