A law enforcement pursuit of a carjacking suspect who stole a vehicle in East LA with three young children inside ended in a violent T-bone crash on PCH at Kanan Dume Road.
The high-speed collision sent the three children and an elderly couple in the other vehicle to the hospital. No updates have been issued as to their condition.
The chase began when the car was stolen in East Los Angeles Friday evening. The suspect led California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers west across LA, passing through Santa Monica on the 10 Freeway before entering the McClure tunnel and continuing on Palisades Beach Road.
The pursuit was fairly low speed until a spike strip was deployed by LA County Sheriff Department deputies in Malibu. After hitting the strip, the driver sped up and began driving even more erratically before crashing around 7:35 p.m.
The suspect immediately leapt from the vehicle, scrambled barefoot up a steep embankment and crossed a field into a Malibu neighborhood where he allegedly tried to carjack another vehicle. He was taken into custody by LASD approximately 15 minutes later.
