SM HISTORY MUSEUM — The Friends of the Santa Monica Library has donated 14 bound volumes of the Santa Monica Topics newspaper to the Santa Monica History Museum. Thirteen volumes date back from 1935 to 1939 and the other volume contains papers published from July 4 to Dec. 30, 1940.
The collection marks the first and only material from the Santa Monica Topics newspaper ever to be held within the museum’s archive and are on display in the museum’s Morley Builders Reference Library.
The set includes blips from the pre-war era, with information about earthquakes, opera, business and social news. It also reveals grocery store ads that tell us that 2 pounds of bananas were priced at 5 cents and showcases the classic Sunday funnies.
In world news, the volumes cover an array of historical happenings including headlines titled, “Famed Dogs Banished from the Alps” and “Hitler in Rome.”
Recently, a 7-year-old visitor found great interest in the museum’s newest addition and was sure to take notes on the intriguing facts to show to his schoolmates.
