# Red Cross adopts soldiers for Christmas

The American Red Cross of Santa Monica and the Rotary Club of Santa Monica are adopting a platoon currently on deployment in Iraq who are from or have family in the Santa Monica area.

Residents and friends may donate the following items to the Red Cross chapter for packaging and shipping to Iraq: New CDs and DVDs, AA batteries, lip balm, beef jerky, writing pens and stationary, fruit roll snacks, small flashlights, vacuum packed snacks and camping food, dental floss, disposable cameras, facial tissues, hand sanitizers (travel size), moist wipes, phone cards, playing cards and foot powder (travel size).

An “Adopt a Platoon Drive-Thru” will be open this Saturday, Nov. 18, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Santa Monica Red Cross, 1450 11th St. Both Red Cross and Rotarian youth volunteers will be on hand to personally accept your contribution. Contributions may also be delivered to the Santa Monica Red Cross chapter anytime through Saturday afternoon, Nov. 18.

Personal messages and holiday greetings are also appreciated. If you can’t bring one of the designated items, monetary donations are also being accepted.

The effort is being made to help brighten up the holiday season for those serving our country by sending them items that service men and women can use while on assignment.
