The local chapter of the Red Cross is a diamond in the rough when it comes to raising revenue.

The Santa Monica chapter of the American Red Cross was honored earlier this month with a coveted “Diamond Award for Excellence in Health and Safety Revenue Generation” from the national American Red Cross. The award was presented at the Red Cross Pacific Service Area Awards Luncheon in Long Beach.

The award recognized Arthur Rojas, the Santa Monica chapter’s director of health and safety services, and his team, for the highest per-capita health and safety sales in the service region which includes California, Guam, the Pacific Islands and Hawaii.

Rojas is in charge of classes which include basic courses in first aid and CPR for adults, children and infants, pet CPR, lifeguard training, CPR and first aid instructor training, lifeguard instructor training and CPR for the professional rescuer. The Santa Monica chapter conducted more than 1,495 classes and trained 8,951 individuals last year. Depending on the course, tuition can range from $39 to $95 per person. Those fees defray chapter expense and supplement donations from the public. Art and his team raised more than $208,000 for the organization last year.

Rojas contributes much of his team’s success to personal attention. “People have heard about our special attention to quality and the excellent service our chapter provides,” he said. “ They are willing to drive from as far as 200 miles to take our courses, year after year.

“Many businesses and occupations require a knowledge of and/or certification in CPR and First Aid to meet Cal-OSHA requirements,” he added. “Having employees with training is just good business practice and part of “being prepared” in emergencies. Our group training can be held either at the chapter or in the workplace.”

The American Red Cross of Santa Monica will offer free adult and child CPR classes on “Super CPR Saturday” March 25\. Persons can sign up by registering in advance. Classes are three hours long and will be held at the Ken Edwards Center, 1527 Fourth St.
