*By Pat Murray Santa Monica*

Kudos to Booth Vance (“The path to safety seems clear”) for his letter of June 27\. As a former bike rider — reduced to being a pedestrian due to an overabundance of sun — I agree wholeheartedly that appropriate signs are needed (on the beach path).

However, cyclists also need to learn the rules of the road. I walk 6.7 miles a day along the Santa Monica pathway, from the California Incline to Venice Pier and back to Santa Monica. It can be hazardous. Starting at Pico (Boulevard), going north to the pier should be pedestrian friendly. But no, cyclists cut off the bike way and use the route past Shutters at high rates of speed. Spandex-clad with helmets, gloves, etc., they zoom in and out past elderly citizens, children and mothers with baby buggies. Meanwhile, there is a beautiful bike path by the ocean unused. I have called the city of Santa Monica asking for signs to be posted — so far, no signs. There is definitely a need.
