SAMOHI — Despite winning all of their games last week, Santa Monica High School’s girls’ volleyball team slipped from No. 2 to No. 3 in the latest CIF-Southern Section Division 3-AA poll, which was released Monday.

The Vikings defeated Ocean League rivals Inglewood, Culver City and Morningside to remain unbeaten in league, yet were jumped in the poll by Pasadena Poly, which now sits at No. 2. Chadwick retained its hold on No. 1 in the poll.

Skaggs named pitcher of the year

Former Samohi baseball standout Tyler Skaggs has been named the Arizona Diamondback’s Organizational Pitcher of the Year, it was announced last week.

Skaggs, who was originally selected by the Los Angeles Angels with the 40th pick in the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft, finished the year with a 9-6 combined record and a 2.96 earned run average. He was fourth among all minor leaguers with 198 strikeouts.

The 20-year-old pitcher began the season at Single-A Visalia before being promoted to Double-A Mobile, where he helped the team win a Southern League title in September.

His accomplishments during the 2011 season also included a start in the XM All-Star Futures Game.

Samohi football moves up a notch

After posting a 36-14 win over Ocean League rival Beverly Hills last week, the Samohi football team moved up a spot to No. 8 in the latest CIF-SS Western Division poll, it was announced Monday.

The Vikings benefited by a loss by fellow Ocean League member Culver City to Inglewood, 30-10. Culver City fell from No. 7 in the poll to No. 9, the spot occupied by Samohi last week.

It is the highest ranking of the season for Samohi.

The Mission League’s Chaminade retained the top spot on the poll.

Next for Samohi is the final home game of the season against Morningside on Friday at 7 p.m. The game is the school’s homecoming.

Pacifica Christian v-ball still tops

Pacifica Christian’s girls’ volleyball team has maintained its No. 1 ranking in the latest CIF-SS Division 4-A poll.

The Seawolves are 20-5 on the season and 6-0 in Heritage League play.

Pacifica Christian was 3-0 last week with two wins over Santa Clarita Christian and another over Hillcrest Christian.

Next for the Seawolves is a road league game against Milken on Thursday. The game is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Samohi to unveil new turf

Samohi will debut its new synthetic turf field during a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.

The field was resurfaced as part of a partnership between the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District and City Hall that will allow enhanced community use at the school located in the Civic Center.

The deal grants residents access to the field during off hours. It will also be available to public groups for special events.
