Twenty-four Shelter Plus Care (S+C) patrons feasted on Mexican cuisine catered by Teddy’s Café earlier this month at Turning Point to celebrate eight years with what the RAND Corp. has described as “the best Shelter Plus Care program in the United States.”

S+C is a HUD-funded rental assistance program designed to provide housing, supportive, and rehabilitative services for homeless persons with chronic disabilities and their families.

“We are part of the ‘Original 26’ who came to Turning Point to get help from this wonderful program,” said one enthusiastic celebrant. “There are at least 10 of us here today.”

Turning Point also provides intensive case management, counseling and support groups, job counseling, money management, health education, computer classes and independent living skills.

“I was homeless with an addiction problem and a young son with a behavior problem,” said Kathy, who would only give her first name. “Today, thanks to Shelter Plus and Turning Point, we live in our own apartment and can give back something to the community.”

“You can’t imagine how grateful I am,”said another participant,“to have my own bedroom and my very own kitchen.”

S+C now aids more than 650 persons per year nationwide. “Shelter Plus Care gives men and women the opportunity to stay independent while working toward self-sufficiency,” said Virgil Hill, Turning Point Project director. “We want to thank the city of Santa Monica Housing Authority for their ongoing support.”

Turning Point is one of OPCC’s 11 programs on eight sites in Santa Monica and West Los Angeles, providing food, outreach, emergency services, transitional and permanent housing, mental and medical health programs, battered women and children services, case management, job counseling, leadership training, peer support, and in-depth preparation for independent living for more than 10,000 homeless and low-income men, women, at-risk teens, and children each year.
