Saint John’s Health Center has finished construction of its new North Pavilion, a four-story, 150-bed inpatient facility and is now beginning its transition to the new building.

The completion of the 200,000-square-foot pavilion is the culmination of the first phase of an extensive rebuilding plan after the 1994 Northridge Earthquake severely damaged the original hospital. The replacement hospital will be the only hospital on the Westside with a state-of-the-art base isolation system that will allow it to remain fully operational immediately following earthquakes with magnitudes of up to 6.8 on the Richter scale, hospital officials said.

While the transition takes place, patients will continue to be treated in the original hospital. Services at the new pavilion, which include critical care, labor and delivery, neonatal intensive care and general surgery, will be open and available for patients in the fall.

Features of the new facility include hotel-like patient rooms including convertible sofa beds and 42-inch plasma TVs with network programs, video-on-demand and Internet access. The facility also contains a wireless data network on each floor.

The second phase of the construction plan — a four-story, 275,000-square-foot diagnostic and treatment facility to be build on the site of the original hospital — is scheduled to be completed in 2008.
