The Santa Monica College Planetarium will present live-hosted shows on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons throughout March, featuring programs on spring skies, the spring equinox, and the life cycle of stars.
Each show runs approximately 40 minutes and is followed by a Q&A with Planetarium Lecturer Sarah Vincent. Friday evening shows begin at 6 p.m. with "The Night Sky Show," followed by a Feature Program at 7 p.m. Sunday Family Matinée shows begin at 1 p.m. with "The Night Sky Show," followed by a Feature Program at 2 p.m. Children under age 3 are not permitted at Friday evening shows.
The March lineup includes:
"The Night Sky Show" — Vincent uses SMC's 4K Digistar projection system to cover the latest astronomy and space exploration news and present a virtual tour of constellations. Scheduled for March 1, 13, 15, 20, 22, 27 and 29.
"Black Holes" — A Deep Sky Deep Dive program exploring black holes, first predicted by Einstein's Theory of Relativity and later confirmed. March 1, 2 p.m.
"Spring Sky" — An exploration of the planets, constellations, and deep sky objects appearing in Santa Monica's spring skies. March 13 and 15.
"Tilt: March Equinox" — An examination of Earth's axial tilt, changing seasons, and whether other planets in the solar system have seasons. March 20 and 22.
"The Life and Death of Stars" — A Deep Sky Deep Dive program tracing the life cycle of stars from nebula to supernova and back. March 27 and 29.
All shows are held in room MSB 126 of the Mathematics + Science Building at 1900 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica. Free parking is available on campus.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for children ages 3-12 per show, or $16 for adults and $10 for children for a combo ticket covering both shows. A $1 per ticket service fee applies. Tickets are available at smc.edu/tickets. More information is available at smc.edu/planetarium.
