The Santa Monica Conservancy is recruiting volunteers to share stories of the city's historic sites during Santa Monica's 150th anniversary celebration.
Volunteer opportunities include conducting guided tours of landmarks like Main Street and the Marion Davies Guest House at Annenberg Community Beach House, plus writing stories about local history for the Conservancy newsletter.
"Each person brings their own story, passion and reason for wanting to preserve the history of this city," said Alissa Reid, community outreach coordinator.
Volunteers completing at least four annual events receive complimentary Conservancy membership, including access to member-only events and special guided tours throughout Los Angeles.
Upcoming events needing volunteers include Doors Open California on Sept. 13-14 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Historic Shotgun House at 2520 Second Street, featuring tours of the 1897 tiny house saved from demolition.
The Route 66 Centennial Exhibition takes place Sept. 25 from 5-7 p.m. at the Shotgun House, commemorating 100 years of the historic highway.
"Untold Stories: The History of the Marquez-Reyes Family" is scheduled Oct. 8 with a 5:30 p.m. reception at the Shotgun House and 7 p.m. talk at Ocean Park Library, featuring family member Sharon Reyes and historian Nina Fresco.
Ongoing volunteer opportunities include guided tours highlighting architectural and cultural landmarks, gardening at the Shotgun House Native Plant Garden led by expert Hilda Weiss, and the Writers' Circle collaborating on stories for over 4,000 newsletter subscribers.
