# Santa Monica It’s an outrage

There is no place like California; beautiful skies, scenic drives, sun kissed smiling faces, and some of the most picturesque coastlines in the world. The protection and nurturing of our coast is essential for not only our economy and our pleasure, but for the coast’s own sake. The November 2007 oil spill in the San Francisco bay area was a catastrophe; over 58,000 gallons of petroleum was spilled killing over 2,000 birds, devastating aquatic life and wiping out natural habitats. We as Californians should be in an outrage! This is our coast, our ocean, our land and we need to save it! The coast is as important to our well-being as it is to our economy. If we must ship dangerous materials in and out of our coasts and bays then it is necessary for those ships to be safe. Elected officials must act on this present window of opportunity to change California’s destructive path toward environmental degradation.
