For the first time ever, the Santa Monica Junior All-Stars will play in the Sub-Division 3 North Western Regional. The baseball game will be played Saturday at Conejo Creek near Thousand Oaks.

Santa Monica’s win against Lomita in Thursday night’s Section 4 tournament, went into extra frames with the score deadlocked, 3-3, after seven innings.

The winning run was walked in during the 10th inning by a Lomita pitcher to make the final score, 4-3.

“Winning has been a whole team effort,” Sergio Carrasco, the team’s head coach, said.

The game held major implications for the Santa Monica squad.

“If Santa Monica would have lost to Lomita, they would have been out,” Matt Steinhaus, majors commissioner of the Santa Monica Little League, said. “It’s a double elimination tournament; once a team loses two games, they’re out.”

The All-Stars’ win has taken the team the farthest into the postseason any Santa Monica all-star team of any age group has gone in the all-star tournament process. Opponents for the team still haven’t been finalized. Carrasco said pairings would be announced before Saturday’s contests.

“The Junior All-Stars is the only team still alive out of the nine boys all-star teams in the city,” Steinhaus said. “Santa Monica is also one of the 16 teams currently playing in all of California.”

For the team to make it into regional play, they’ll have to win between four and six more games.

“We’re all excited and nervous,” said Oscar Carrasco, a pitcher for the team and son of the coach, “but I think we’ll do well.”
