Debbie Anderson, a surgical nurse and first assistant at St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica, died in a car accident near her home in Brentwood on June 24\. Anderson, 48, worked as a nurse for more than 20 years. She was born Dec. 27, 1955, and grew up in Redding. She moved to Los Angeles in the early 1990s.

She began her career as a surgical nurse in Redding, where she assisted in complex heart surgeries. She later worked at Encino-Tarzana Regional Medical Center.

She was an accomplished athlete who enjoyed track and field, discus, snow skiing and working on ski patrol. She became the National Water Skiing Champion in the mid-1980s. She was also a 14-year-old yo-yo champion in her high school days.

Anderson also enjoyed golf, bicycling, tennis and daily fitness training. Just this year, she had started learning to surf.

During her life, she traveled throughout the United States and to Costa Rica and Nova Scotia. Earlier this year she traveled across Europe, where she visited the homeland of her ancestors in France and met many of her relatives.

Anderson was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church and regularly attended services in both Pasadena and Beverly Hills.

Anderson is survived by her parents, Richard and Evelyn Anderson of Redding; her brother, Frank Anderson of Redding; and other relatives and friends.

A memorial service for close friends and family will be held Saturday, July 10, at 10:30 a.m. at All Saints Episcopal Church in Beverly Hills.
