Santa Monica Playhouse will present "Look What Fell Out De Mango Tree" on Saturday, July 12 at 4 p.m. as part of its 2025 Black History [every] Month project, a year-long celebration highlighting Black arts, artists and culture.
The play, based on playwright Debra Ehrhardt's true-life story, explores themes of forgiveness and vulnerability. The production follows Debra as she uncovers a secret that transforms her ability to forgive and changes her relationships with men.
"You can't give yourself to someone when you are not intact, when pieces of you are missing," according to the play's description. The story demonstrates how seeking truth and understanding can free individuals from past hurts and enable them to move forward.
The Black History [every] Month project was inspired by a Playhouse conservatory student who questioned why Black history was only celebrated in February. The initiative aims to recognize and honor diverse cultures, traditions and philosophies throughout the year to support community health and evolution.
The project receives generous support from the We Are Santa Monica Fund, the City of Santa Monica, the Santa Monica Arts Commission and Playhouse PALS. Additional backing comes from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Arts Commission and the Ahmanson Foundation.
