Santa Monica Playhouse will present a staged reading of "Jewish for Dinner," a new play by Lou Borenstein based on his award-winning short film "Jewish for Lunch."
The comedy follows Ruth Cohen, who finds what she believes is the perfect Jewish man to bring home to her family. After falling in love and getting engaged, she discovers he is not actually Jewish. Fearing her family's disapproval of an intermarriage, she convinces him to pretend he is Jewish, though his limited knowledge of Jewish culture threatens to expose their charade.
The staged reading features the same cast as the original short film, which won Best Comedy at the Melbourne Independent Filmmakers Festival, Best Comedy and Best Actor for Rylie Decocq at the Mentone Film Festival, and Best Jewish Short Film at the Anatolian Film Festival in Turkey.
The cast includes Kate Huffman, Rylie Decocq, Joey Jupiter-Levin, Gregory Cohen, Ben Horwitz, Amanda Dolan, Eric Schiffer and Danielle Tjoelker. Borenstein wrote and directed both the film and stage adaptation.
Proceeds from the performance will benefit the Save the Main Stage Fund, which aims to rebuild the playhouse's iconic auditorium destroyed in a water damage disaster one year ago.
"Jewish for Dinner" will be performed Sunday, Aug. 24, at 7:30 p.m. General admission tickets cost $25 and include a post-show reception with wine and desserts featuring the cast and creative team.
Santa Monica Playhouse is located at 1211 4th Street, one block east of the Third Street Promenade. The venue is accessible by Santa Monica Blue Bus, LA Metro Rapid #720 with stops at 4th and Wilshire, or Metro E line to 4th and Colorado.
The playhouse's programs receive support from the We Are Santa Monica Fund, Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture, the City of Santa Monica and Santa Monica Arts Commission, the Ahmanson Foundation, the Rotary Club Foundation and Playhouse PALS.
