*By Chuck Levin Los Angeles*

The article by Melody Hanatani about my mother Sylvia Levin (“She’s a superstar registrar,” Sept. 18) and her volunteer effort to expand democracy by her 34-year relentless campaign to register voters is most appreciated. She is honored to have the opportunity to pursue this community service. All of us can contribute to reviving the health of our political system if we embrace our Constitutional right to vote in all local, state and national elections.

The first step is for all eligible citizens to register to vote. The negative consequences of voter apathy — a 20-year-epidemic — are all too apparent. We must reverse that trend and it is everyone’s responsibility to recognize that citizen participation and involvement is the key to restoring our community and our country.

Your vote is one that counts. In 2008, there will be a presidential primary in February, the state primary in June, the general election in November. In a democracy, voting is a right, a privilege and a responsibility. On every issue or crisis, education, traffic, health care, peace, environment, debt, justice, global warming, prosperity, budget priorities, safety, political integrity, sustainability, infrastructure, the direction and promise of our future is better and brighter when we are engaged and when we participate.
