*By Ocean Park Association Santa Monica*

The Ocean Park Association is grateful for the rotating security presence provided at our branch library in the wake of the alarming attack on librarian Celia Carroll last month.

However, due to our library’s close proximity to the beach and its transient population, we believe its security needs are greater than those of all other branches save for the new Main Library. Anecdotal reports suggest that patrons of the Ocean Park Library, particularly children, are being increasingly intimidated in recent years by our street population.

In addition, OPA feels that it’s inappropriate to require library staff, who are not hired or trained for security, to police the facility given the population frequently using this facility. That is a job for a professional security guard.

Consequently, we urge you to retain a full-time security guard dedicated solely to the protection of the patrons and staff of the Ocean Park Library during all of its hours of operation.
