THE BEDROOM After 45 years of marriage, Evelyn Freeman could hardly believe she’d get aroused just by looking at her husband, but that was the case one recent afternoon when the 90-year-old laid eyes on 92-year-old Al as he sauntered into the bedroom dripping wet, wearing only a teeny, tiny piece of cloth.

“I was amazed at how deeply, sexually turned on I was,” said Freeman, a former director of peer counseling at the Center for Healthy Aging in Santa Monica, where earli-er this week, she joined other seniors to talk about the somewhat taboo topic of sex amongst the elderly.

“People say that there’s nothing like the excitement you get from a new love affair,” Freeman added,“but I found that the attraction I have for Al is deeper and more powerful than any affair.

“Yes, attraction changes over time... it has only grown stronger.”

For many, the thought of their parents having sex is enough to make them cringe, but bring grandparents into the mix and the younger generation may start to feel downright queasy.

Seniors having sex — it’s hard for many to believe or accept, but it’s happening, probably a lot more often than one would think.

“I’m always thinking about sex,” said Bert, an 83-year-old who did not want to give his last name, because like all gentleman, he doesn’t like to kiss and tell.“I’m just as aroused now when I see a pretty woman as I did back then.”

With a longtime lover of 16 years, Bert isn’t alone. Seniors all over are getting it on behind closed doors, according to studies by the AARP, and interviews with sex therapists who work with older couples on remaining intact with their sexuality.

“Just because we get older, our desire for intimacy doesn’t disappear,” said Nieli Langer, author of “Love & Sex: Are We Ever Too Old?”

“We all have a real stumbling block in our country when it comes to recognizing that sexuality is a fundamental dimension of all human beings,” Langer added. “Whether you are 25 or 65, the need for love, sex and belonging are normal, natural and vital for life.”

With 78 million baby boomers marching towards retirement, more focus is being paid to issues affecting older Americans. While television and movies focus mostly on young lovers, the reality is, those with gray hair and wrinkles are still belly-slapping between the sheets.

More than half of seniors surveyed by AARP said they were “extremely” or “somewhat” satisfied with their sex life and 60 percent agreed that sexual activity is a critical part of a good relationship. Of those surveyed, 84 percent disagreed strongly that sex is only for younger people.

“I have guys coming in here with canes and in wheelchairs, and I say, ‘Hey, buddy, more power to you,’” said Georgia Woo, co-owner of Secret Desires, a sex shop on Lincoln Boulevard. “The majority of our older customers are men coming in to buy lingerie or toys for their partners, usually vibrators and strap-ons.”

It is believed that the elderly are having more sex now than ever before, and not because the deed has become more acceptable in the mainstream. Advances in the treatment of erectile dysfunction and the creation of drugs like Viagra and Cialis have made it easier for older men to get and sustain an erection.

“I was going to say it gets harder, but I should say it gets tougher to perform and you have a fear that you won’t be able to consummate,” said Bert, a Lothario in his prime who now has sex at least once a week, which he admits is good enough for him.“It’s not like it was when you were younger. You can’t do what you used to and sometimes you don’t have an orgasm. You just can’t, but that’s OK because I can get as much enjoyment — well, maybe not as much — but I do get pleasure from making my partner have an orgasm.”

Bert, like many his age, had an operation on his prostate and as a result, he ejaculates into his bladder, which reduces the impact of his orgasm.

Irv, a 77-year-old widower with a steady girlfriend, has to use a pump to sustain an erection. He said this does not allow him to have an orgasm, but he is able to pleasure his mate.

“It’s not the most comfortable thing,” Irv said of his pump. “But it gives you a large erection and it lasts … When I look back, this is the happiest I’ve ever been in my life.”

That’s because his relationship with his girl-friend is more than just physical — the case with most people of his age. They’ve had their fun playing the field and have now settled down with a person they have a deep connection with. When that happens, something as little as a look can get them in the mood. And when that happens, it doesn’t have to end with sex.

“Using your penis isn’t everything,” said Al Freeman. “Just the closeness of two bodies, the loving touch from another, can be a stimulant.”

Bryce Britton, an internationally known sex therapist with a practice in Santa Monica, said sex is really just a 13-letter word for sex, meaning lovers need to focus on the mental just as much as the physical, since it may take more to get aroused than when they were young.

Basically, foreplay plays an even more important role the older we get. It may take some effort, but it’s worth it in the long run.

“Sex is related to a lot of factors and variables in longevity,” Britton said. “It has been shown that heart disease, particularly in men, decreases when people have a healthy sex life. It has also been reported that men who have regular orgasms enjoyed a death rate half of those who did not.

“There’s all these reasons to continue having sex, and as the population gets older, hopefully there will be more studies so we can learn more about aging and its affects.”

Seniors know they have a long way to go in dismissing the perception that sexual desire decreases with age, especially in a day and age when sex has permeated society to the point that young men and women are basing their self worth on whether or not they attractive.

The only thing they can do is talk with the younger generation and shed some light on the subject, said Evelyn Freeman “We have to work to make sex not such a dirty word,”she said.“We have to let younger people know that if you like sex, that’s not going to change when you get older.”
