What would you do if you and your daughter were imprisoned on a remote island? Conjure magical illusions and seek revenge on your captors?

Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” is coming to the Morgan-Wixson Theatre. Under the direction of Lewis Stout, four of the roles, traditionally played by men, will feature women: Alonso is now Alonsa; Gonzolo is Gonzala; Trinculo is Trincula and Sebastian is Sabatini.

Conceived and directed by Tara Redepenning, with musical direction by Darin Goulet, the fourth act masque, or pageant, rarely performed and usually slighted in most stagings of “The Tempest,” features local opera and dance talent. True to tradition, the masque celebrates the impending nuptials with singing, dancing, poetry and magic, and a storyline that parallels the themes and symbols of the play.

“The Tempest” is playing at the Morgan-Wixson Theatre on Friday, April 29 through Saturday, May 28\. Friday and Saturday performances will be at 8 p.m. Matinee performances will be held on Sundays at 2 p.m., as well as one Saturday matinee on May 14 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 for general admission, $12 for seniors and $10 for students, with group discounts available, and may be purchased by calling the theatre box office at (310) 828-7519.
