Much is discussed in Santa Monica about the homeless population, but rarely is it about the success stories of people getting off the streets and learning how to be self sufficient.

On Sept. 23, “Celebrating Success: From Homelessness to Self Sufficiency & Healthy Lives” Tenth Annual Breakfast and Awards Ceremony will be all about the people who have been lifted out of homelessness with the help of local service providers.

The event will honor 25 previously homeless individuals who have made changes in their lives, and will recognize seven organizations and businesses that have contributed to the Westside Shelter and Hunger Coalition, its member social service agencies and their clients. The city of Santa Monica will be recognized for its leadership to end homelessness.

The breakfast will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 8 a.m., with the awards program starting at 8 a.m. The outdoor event will be held at Bergamot Station, 2525 Michigan Ave., and the emcee will be Wendie Malick, award-winning actress and humanitarian. The benefactor is Saint John’s Health Center and the patrons are The Richard F. and Eleanor W. Dwyer Fund, Kehillat Israel, the Parish of St. Matthew and St. Monica Parish Community.

The cost is $30 per person, or $300 for a table of 10\. Seats are limited and depending on availability on event day, the cost is $40 per person at the door. Call (310) 314-0071, or log onto for more information.

The Westside Shelter and Hunger Coalition is a group of more than 30 social service providers, faith congregations and supporting organizations committed to ending homelessness through service coordination, public education and advocacy.

The coalition members have worked together for more than 20 years to provide a continuum of care for homeless and low-income individuals and families. They have built an infrastructure that serves the needs of the many sub-groups of the homeless population including veterans, battered women, families and individuals with mental illness, drug or alcohol addiction, or AIDS.
