The Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce and the City of Santa Monica recently announced this year’s Sustainable Quality Award winners. For eight years, the SQA program has honored local organizations and businesses that make extraordinary contributions to the community.

This year’s four winners will be honored at a Chamber of Commerce luncheon at 11:30 a.m., on May 6 at the Four Points Sheraton at 530 Pico Blvd.

The SQA winners include The Library Alehouse, ZJ Boardinghouse, The Real Earth Environmental Company and Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center.

The Library Alehouse, a Main Street restaurant, incorporates organic ingredients into its menu and composts its kitchen waste. The restaurant also sponsors community programs such as the Ocean Park Cleanup.

ZJ Boardinghouse features environmentally friendly organic fibers and nontoxic materials among its surf, snow and skate equipment. Environmental initiatives also include energy saving retrofits and eco-friendly procurement policies.

The Real Earth Environmental Company sells a wide variety of earth-friendly cleaning supplies, ranging from tree-free paper to non-toxic cleaning supplies.

The Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center has implemented a chemical waste reduction program that has reduced its medical waste by 45 percent in 2 years.

Four other companies received excellence awards for stewardship of the natural and environment for their commitment to the environment. They are, Real Foods Daily, VIdiots, Mani’s Bakery and Duke’s of Malibu. The 18th Street Arts Complex and Seashore Motel will also receive honorable mention for its effort in addressing environmental issues.
