The public will be given its first opportunity to experience a sound installation in a seemingly unexpected environment.

A live performance of the Frank Gehry-designed Listen Edgemar will be held May 16 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., in the subterranean parking garage.

The evening is an opening celebration for a permanent, though ever-changing, composition designed for this site, officials said.

Composers Hugh Livingston and Michael Zbyszynski created the sound installation. The installation isn’t designed as music, but a tapestry of sound, officials said. In concert with the high and low tides of the nearby Santa Monica Municipal Pier, five-minute episodes mix the sounds from the courtyard and instrumental improvisations.

The schedule of tides will be announced in the elevator and posted in the garage. The first illumination of AHA, a light sculpture by artist Thomas Eatherton, is also planned for May 16.

The event will be free and open to the public, with refreshments in the courtyard. The musicians who participated in recording the source materials will be on hand for an opening night performance, including Pauline Oliveros (accordion) from New York and Philip Gelb (shakuhachi) from Oakland.

Los Angeles-based musicians Jessica Catron (cello), Jeremy Drake (prepared guitar), Vinny Golia (single reeds and flute) and Paul Livingstone (sitar and Mexican guitar) round out the roster.

Edgemar is located at 2435 Main St., one block north of Ocean Park Boulevard, or five blocks south of Pico Boulevard and two blocks in from the beach.
