# SMC cosmetology to hold open house

Even education departments need a facelift every now and again.

The Santa Monica College cosmetology department has received a major makeover with new equipment and furniture. The department, which also provides full hair, nails and facial salon service to the public, has replaced 28-year-old furniture with 90 new modern stations and chairs, new facial beds and facial machines, and more. The work stations are built of sturdy plywood and Formica, and have a black marble-like look, thanks to a recent $136,000 federal vocational grant.

The salon is open to the public from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 8:15 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays. Prices are lower than professional salons, and discounts are offered to SMC students with I.D. Free services are provided to SMC employees.

To celebrate the new equipment, the cosmetology school is holding an open house on May 17, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., in room 143 of the business building, 1900 Pico Blvd. For information, call (310) 434-4294\. Seniors offered an ‘out’
