The Santa Monica College Emeritus Art Gallery will present a free online exhibition showcasing painted portraits by artist and SMC Emeritus student Barbara Gordon beginning Jan. 22.

The exhibition opens Thursday, Jan. 22, with a free live Zoom Virtual Launch Event from 5 to 6:30 p.m. A link will go live at event time on the gallery's website.

Emeritus Gallery Curator Jesse Benson will host the opening reception featuring a discussion between Benson and Gordon about selected works.

"When I met Barbara, about a decade ago, it was immediately clear that she was seeking real connection with the subjects of her artwork," Benson said. "Over time her paintings have become increasingly focused and committed, as well as exponentially prolific."

The exhibition will present a significant selection of painted portraits of women and children showcasing Gordon's ability to connect with and empower her subjects.

"90% of what I do are portraits of women and children," Gordon said. "I gravitate toward photos of faces that have poignancy and depth. I went back to school about 15 years ago and graduated in Women's Studies, which fits with the type of subject I tend to choose."

To view the online exhibition anytime after 5 p.m. on Jan. 22, visit the gallery website and click the exhibition link, available 24 hours a day. The link takes viewers directly to the exhibition album on a Facebook page open to public viewing; a Facebook account is not necessary.

SMC's Emeritus program, founded in 1975 as a noncredit program to serve the lifelong learning interests of older adults, offers more than 120 noncredit adult education classes and special programs serving more than 3,000 students each year.
