The SMC Pete & Susan Barrett Art Gallery will host a free reception from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, for "Living Echoes," an exhibition of work by Santa Monica College art faculty.

The free exhibition opened Sept. 22 and runs through March 13, 2027\. A free artist talk and panel is scheduled for 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, in the gallery.

Students in SMC's Art 80, 82 and 84 Gallery Exhibition & Display course series curated the show. Their instructor is Kim Garcia. The students conducted studio visits, produced a learning guide, and selected and mounted the artwork. The course series gives students hands-on experience in planning, researching, operating and managing exhibition spaces.

The exhibition brings together 27 faculty artists working in painting, sculpture, photography, installation and mixed media. It explores connections between memory, identity, material and place.

"The exhibition," Garcia said, "explores how artists process what is happening around and within themselves in a fast-paced world where constant change can feel overwhelming."

The featured artists are Rhiannon Aarons, Liv Aanrud, Amanda Artsy, Terri Bromberg, Jerrold Burchman, Nehemiah Cisneros, Ismael de Anda III, Rebecca Frantz, Kim Garcia, Nevada Hardman, Carlson Hatton, Robert Brian Huerta, Jorge A. Jimenez Jr., Amy MacKay, Robin Mitchell, Margaret Oakley, Nathan Ota and Risk, Holly Perez, Kaelyn Rodriguez, Reinhart Revilla Selvik, Jane Shibata, Svetlana Shigroff, Emily Silver, Matthew Thomason, Marc Trujillo, Gerald Michael Vicich, Natasha Wheat and John Zarcone.

The gallery is a student-centered contemporary art space. It works to close equity gaps in higher education and in gallery and museum settings, and it hosts workshops and campus and citywide activities.
