The Santa Monica College Music Department will present a variety of concerts in November, including a benefit to support the SMC Applied Music Program. All events are held in performance spaces at the SMC Performing Arts Center, located at 1310 11th Street (at Santa Monica Boulevard), Santa Monica.
The performances are:
- Friday, November 2, at 7:30 p.m. in The Broad Stage: SMC Applied Music Showcase: A Benefit Concert, with a Guest Performance by the SMC Emeritus Gospel Community Choir: Some of SMC’s most gifted music students will perform a concert under the direction of Brian Driscoll to support the SMC Music Department’s distinctive Applied Music Program, dedicated to fostering the development of outstanding instrumentalists, vocalists, and composers. The SMC Emeritus Gospel Community Choir is directed by William Bryant. (Tickets are $10.)
- Friday, November 9, at 7:30 p.m. in The Broad Stage: SMC Jazz Vocal Ensemble: “Every (Other) Day I Have the Blues – Remembering Joe Williams.” Andreas Preponis will direct SMC’s award-winning jazz vocal ensemble in a performance that pays tribute to master jazz singer Joe Williams, with featured guest artist Dave Tull. (Tickets are $10.)
- Friday, November 16, at 1 p.m. in the Music Hall: SMC Percussion Ensemble Recital. Conductor Megumi Smith will lead the ensemble in a creative, unique performance of percussion music, covering a variety of styles. (Free. - Friday, November 16, at 7 p.m. in The Edye: Fall Jazz Concerts: Carl Allen. SMC will wrap up its Fall Jazz Concerts with a special event featuring legendary drummer Carl Allen — who has performed with Freddie Hubbard and George Coleman — in a rare Los Angeles appearance. (Tickets are $10)
- Sunday, November 18, at 4 p.m. in The Broad Stage: SMC Wind Ensemble Winter Concert. The SMC Wind Ensemble Winter Concert, under the direction of Kevin O. McKeown, will feature six movements of Julie Giroux’s “Bookmarks from Japan,” inspired by the artwork of Hiroshige Ando and Hokusai Katsushika. All ages are welcome. (Tickets are $10.)
- Saturday, November 24, at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.; Sunday, November 25, at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.; and Friday, November 30, at 7 p.m. in The Broad Stage: Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker” Ballet. The SMC Symphony will once again partner with the Westside Ballet for its annual holiday extravaganza featuring falling snow and a Christmas tree that grows. The production – in a theater where every seat provides visual and audio delights for all ages – is produced with support from Santa Monica College, the SMC Public Policy Institute, and the City of Santa Monica. - Thursday, November 29, at 11:15 a.m. in The Edye: SMC Guitar Showcase. SMC’s advanced guitar students will perform an epic concert featuring classical, rock, pop, blues, and reggae music. (Free.
