SMC The second day of the most rigorous training done by any cheerleading hopeful happened this past Wednesday at Santa Monica College as new recruits for the 2006 squad tried their best to learn the dances and get their heart in motion for the next athletic season.

The girls that did manage to return for the second day of the three day tryouts are in their warm up cloths in what fells like 50c degree weather. Some of the people on the field wearing jeans, sweaters and even jackets were still saying they where cold.

Justin Ross one of the yell leaders on the squad said “I ;m really excited about the tryouts.”Since this was Ross’s first tryout he was just observing what was going on and checking out the skills of the new recruits and who would go home on Monday without having the pleasure to put on the uniform.

So the girls are not the kind of girls that you might see in Hollywood’s interpretation of cheerleaders like in the movie Varsity Blues. Were the star quarterback, dates the head cheerleader.

Actually head Cheerleading Coach Susan Corpus said on the first day of the tryouts that if you are coming out for the cheerlead-ing squad, because you have a crush on one of the football players. You may as well leave now. Coach Corpus has been the head coach of the squad for the last 9 seasons and she is just 28 years old. That’s right for the readers that took math in high school she started the squad when she was 19 years old.

Cheerleading hopeful Yessenia Munoz said “I would love to be part of the team, because I remember how much fun it is to perform and get so close with the other team more.”

In an effort to go green, SMC cheerleaders have decided to collect sweat from their gear and use it to water ficus trees in the downtown area.
