A documentary showcasing four-time Grammy Award winner Stanley Clarke's artistic residency at BroadStage has been selected as an official entry in the 26th Newport Beach Film Festival.
"Rhythm & Harmony," created by Santa Monica College students in the Short-Form Visual Media Production program, will screen Oct. 19 at 11 a.m. in the Short Documentaries category at The Lot 3, Fashion Island.
The film documents Clarke's three-year artistic residency at BroadStage, which operates out of The Eli & Edythe Broad Stage at the SMC Performing Arts Center. The residency included performances, curation and mentorship opportunities for SMC and Santa Monica High School music students.
The documentary was directed and produced by Communications & Media Studies instructor Roxanne Messina Captor, whose students from the Media 21 class created the film. Design Technology professor Walt Louie and Film Production instructor Vishal Solanki supervised the project.
"Rhythm & Harmony" features behind-the-scenes moments, student performances and anecdotes from Clarke about mentorship. It includes an artist interview by SMC Music Department Chair Brian Driscoll and reflections from SMC Superintendent/President Dr. Kathryn E. Jeffery.
Clarke became a Jazz Master honoree by the National Endowment for the Arts in 2022, the highest honor the U.S. bestows on jazz artists. He received the Miles Davis Award at the Montreal Jazz Festival and Bass Player Magazine's Lifetime Achievement Award. The Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture selected Clarke for its permanent collection.
Santa Monica College offers associate degrees and certificates in Broadcast Programming and Production, with hands-on training in television, radio and internet broadcasting.
