"Scheherazade," one of Rimsky-Korsakov's most popular works, is filled with sweeping melodies, rich colors and dramatic adventure. The music, also known as "The Arabian Nights," was inspired by pictures from "One Thousand and One Nights."

Musotto said the piece takes its name from one of King Shahryar's wives. In the story, the king, convinced that women are untrustworthy after a previous wife's infidelity, marries a new bride each night and executes her the next morning. Scheherazade avoids that fate by telling him a captivating tale each night and stopping at a cliffhanger as dawn breaks.

"This routine continues for 1,001 nights, during which they have three children, and the king falls in love with her, finally abandoning his cruel law," Musotto said. "The music of Rimsky-Korsakov's piece is rich with all the drama we imagine was in Scheherazade's tales."
