Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District has completed foundational Generative Artificial Intelligence Literacy Training for staff at all school sites, marking a significant step in the district's push toward future-ready learning.

The training covered core concepts of generative AI, including algorithmic bias, environmental impact, academic integrity and data privacy. Rather than framing AI tools as inherently beneficial or harmful, the district adopted a balanced approach designed to promote responsible use.

"AI is a powerful tool that depends entirely on human input and responsible adoption and training," the district said in a statement.

The district's EdTech team has launched a Generative AI website featuring resources and policy updates, guidance for students and parents, and staff materials. The site is available at https://www.smmusd.org/ai.

Building on the staff training, the EdTech team will launch a student-facing pilot at the high school level using Google Gemini. The controlled pilot will allow teachers and students to explore generative AI as a collaborative learning assistant while maintaining academic integrity. Lesson plans will focus on teaching students to use these tools responsibly, safely and creatively.

The pilot will also incorporate guidance from the California Department of Education's AI Guidance document, published in January 2026, and will inform the district's development of a long-term student AI policy and curriculum.

The EdTech team will present a study session on AI literacy progress to the SMMUSD Board of Education during the Spring 2026 semester. Community members are welcome to attend in person or via Zoom.
