Parents looking to participate in discussions about the school district’s controversial special education program can do so at a series of community meetings to be held in February.

The special education program has drawn criticism from parents and the City Council because of a confidentiality clause in settlement agreements for special education students. The contentious issue has fueled some parents’ distrust of the district.

District officials said Wednesday that parents and other interested parties will be able to meet with Dr. Lou Barber four times between Feb. 6 and 7\. Barber has been selected to conduct an independent, comprehensive review of special education, something which the City Council requested in order for the district to receive a $530,000 increase in aid.

The first meeting will be held Feb. 6 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the district headquarters, 1651 16th Street. Two meetings will take place Feb. 7 at the district headquarters, while the final meeting will be held that same day at the Malibu High School Library, located at 30215 Morning View Dr. in Malibu.

The meetings at the district will start at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The Malibu meeting is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m.

Those who can’t attend can

The district encourages parents and guardians to attend one of these sessions to ensure that the review is as complete as possible.
