Becoming an explorer takes a significant commitment that many teens aren’t ready to give. Cornejo had to enroll in initial training at the South Bay Regional Law Enforcement Explorer Academy, which consists of 20 consecutive Saturdays and includes over 90 hours of instruction in demeanor, firearms safety, police procedures, first aid, criminal law, and community relations. Upon completion, explorers earn their uniforms.

And just like her older brother, Cornejo is influencing her young sister, who recently enrolled in the academy to train along side her siblings.

It’s that camaraderie and a sense of community that is of a particular interest to Cornejo, who enjoys giving back. It has kept her focused on what is important in her life.

“I really like the activities, and it is something for me to keep with,” she said, recalling her time working with the community at the PALoween Carnival, which is held every year, catering to families by providing a safe and fun atmosphere for trick-or-treating.

The explorers also help with missing persons investigations by handing out flyers and joining search parties. They can also be seen at Farmers’ Markets and on the promenade performing traffic control.

Although Cornejo enjoys her time working with the police department, she is not certain at this point whether she will pursue a career in law enforcement. In an effort to be well-rounded, she has become involved in a wide range of other activities. She plays junior varsity basketball at Santa Monica High School and dances ballet florico, a Mexican folk dance.

Cornejo also has high hopes for college and has set her sights set on UCLA, but she has yet to decide what she wants to study.

Regardless of what she chooses to pursue, Cornejo knows that being an Explorer has changed her for the better.

“It has shaped me a lot,” she said. “When I first came, I had no knowledge of law enforcement. I know a lot now and I have enjoyed helping the community and getting the hands on experience.”
