California State Parks announced that repairs will begin later this month on Malibu Pier in Malibu Lagoon State Beach, following the recent award of an emergency contract.

The work marks a major step toward safely reopening the end of the pier, which has been closed since January 2025 as a precautionary safety measure to address critical structural concerns. The rest of the pier has remained open to the public.

Cushman Contracting Corporation is expected to begin construction in mid-October, and the work is expected to last about three months. State Parks anticipates completing repairs by the end of January 2027.

The $2.125 million project, funded through Proposition 4, the 2024 Climate Bond, will repair or replace deteriorated and missing pilings and replace bracing to strengthen the pier.

Gov. Gavin Newsom's Sept. 21 emergency proclamation, issued ahead of the anticipated El Niño storm season, helped speed up the contract. State Parks said the proclamation cut red tape to streamline contracting and permitting for the project. It will also help state and local agencies take early, decisive action to protect critical coastal infrastructure ahead of what is projected to be a historic El Niño season.

After the end of the pier closed, above-water and underwater inspections confirmed the need for significant repairs. A specialized ocean engineering consultant completed a comprehensive structural assessment in June, identifying deteriorated and missing pilings that need to be repaired or replaced.

State Parks is coordinating with the State Fire Marshal, California Coastal Commission, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, State Lands Commission and State Water Resources Control Board to expedite regulatory reviews and emergency permitting. The department also continues to work closely with the city of Malibu and other partners.

Malibu Pier offers fishing, dining and views of the surf. State Parks said it will post project updates and information about the closure on its FAQ webpage as major repair milestones are reached.
