CITYWIDE — It’s time to lay the Christmas trees to rest.

All this month, Santa Monica residents can dump their once beautifully decorated evergreens at four city parks — Clover Park (25th Street and Ocean Park Boulevard); Douglas Park (Chelsea Avenue and Wilshire Boulevard); Reed Park (Lincoln Boulevard and California Avenue); and Los Amigos Park (Fifth Street and Hollister Avenue) — free of charge.

The “Park Your Tree” program allows residents to drop off their trees at any one of the sites, where the city’s Refuse and Recycling Services employees will later come to retrieve them.

Trees can also be left outside for collection on trash day or dropped off at the city’s Transfer Station at 2401 Delaware Ave., between 6 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Residents began depositing trees immediately after Christmas last week. By Friday afternoon, a pile of 40 -50 trees were scattered along the California Avenue side of Reed Park.

City crews began picking them up from the park on Saturday. The trees will subsequently be turned to mulch.

Christmas tree mulch is most commonly used for hiking trails, fish habitat, river delta sedimentation management, beach erosion prevention and lake and river shoreline stabilization, according to the National Christmas Tree Association.

More than 33 million real Christmas trees are sold in North America every year.
