The city of Santa Monica will collect Christmas trees for recycling at four local parks the first two weekends in January. Residents also can recycle their trees for free at the city’s refuse and recycling transfer station throughout the month.

Residents with curbside recycling service can place their cut-up tree in their yard waste collection container. Officials ask that people remove tinsel, ornaments and stands from the tree.

It is unlawful and a serious fire hazard to leave unwanted trees at the curb or in the alleys, city officials said.

Santa Monica drop-off services are at these parks: ■Douglas Park, Chelsea Avenue and Wilshire Boulevard. ■Reed Park, Lincoln Boulevard and California Avenue. ■Los Amigos Park, Fifth Street and Hollister Avenue. ■Clover Park, 25th Street and Ocean Park Boulevard. Pick-up times will be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Jan. 3-4, and Jan. 10-11\. Hours for the Santa Monica refuse and recycling transfer station are Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. The facility is located at 2401 Delaware Ave. Call (310) 829-7323 for more information. People who live outside of Santa Monica’s city limits can call the city of Los Angeles Christmas tree recycling hotline at (800) 5-TREE-56 for information about recycling in their neighborhoods.
