I have just read the article in your paper regarding turning Ocean Park Boulevard into a one-lane street each way (”One lane or another?” page 1, Jan. 15). Did the city consider trying modifications with traffic signals? If there were more left-turn signals, that would go a long way to help move the traffic in both directions. Pico Boulevard needs more left-turn signals as well. I agree that it is a complicated safety situation but there is more congestion and a longer commute time with this stretch being one way. I find the crosswalk lights are very helpful in alerting drivers that pedestrians are crossing the street. Perhaps the addition of more of those would be possible. In the end, due to such heavy traffic, I feel that the two lanes should be restored. There are so many “traffic calming” measures in Santa Monica and West Los Angeles as it is that you barely move during peak traffic times and this just creates a search for other surface streets to ease the commute which in turn creates more “traffic calming” measures. I believe that we need to keep the main streets as accessible as is possible.
