*By Eugene Scala, Jr. Santa Monica*

How fitting it was to declare the Republicans out of touch while you \[Kenny Mack\] and all of the other Dems continue to show how you all stopped evolving, and how you “tow the party line” goose-stepping in synch (“Still out of touch,” page 5 Sept. 10).

For example, would you care to guess-timate the cost of Michelle Obama’s outfit, or are you to suggest she grabbed whatever fit off the rack at Goodwill? The point was to raise money for disaster relief \[following Hurricane Gustav\]. Who cares what they \[Cindy McCain, Laura Bush\] wear when addressing the nation on 25 different channels in doing so? The last time the Obama’s asked for money was to fill their own sweet coffers “one dollar at a time.”

You lose all credibility when you slide right into the gutter with your persistent name-calling. That’s more fitting for a 10 year old in the playground at recess. Please, I thought you were better than that.

The fact remains that while McCain may be labeled a Republican, and is representing the party on the ticket, he is anything but in many ways. This makes him most attractive to the rest of us. Adding Gov. Palin — whom I never heard of before last month, and I consider myself an educated politico — on the ticket was a stroke of genius, for she fills in the Republican holes that he oversteps.

More importantly, the choice once again shows how progressive our party will be. If, and when, the first woman, the first African-American, the first Jewish president shall be elected in this United States, I will proudly stand in their honor as a fellow Republican. That’s how “out of touch” we are.
