Agustya Karadkar knows how tough it can be when a family member is ill. Now the 17-year-old scout is trying to make that experience a little easier for children going through it themselves.

Karadkar, a member of Santa Monica-based Troop 1, and fellow scouts assembled 50 care kits on Oct. 18 for patients at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles as part of his Eagle Scout service project. The kits, filled with toys, art supplies and games, are headed to the hospital, where its Volunteer Services team will distribute them to young patients.

The idea came from close to home.

“I chose to do a project for the Children’s Hospital because I have recently had a family member who was ill, and to say the least, it was a tough time,” Karadkar said. “I could only imagine what the kids at the children’s hospital were going through, so I wanted my project to hopefully distract them.”

The scouts gathered from 3 to 7 p.m. in Nolte Hall at [St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church](https://www.standrews-wla.org/?ref=smdp.com), 11555 National Blvd., in Los Angeles. They built a box for each kit and filled it with Play-Doh, crayons, colored pencils, markers, a sketch pad, toy cars and a deck of Uno cards.

“This was a great experience not only for me but also for the scouts who attended, who got to work on a project that will benefit members of our community,” Karadkar said.

The assembly day marked the second phase of the project. In the first phase, Karadkar reached out to local businesses to secure donations for the kits. With support from fellow scouts, friends, family and community members, he raised funds and collected the supplies that filled the boxes.

Karadkar said he also leaned on the hospital itself as he planned.

“The Children’s Hospital does great work, and they were incredibly helpful in telling me the best course of action to help their patients,” he said.

After the kits were assembled, Karadkar planned to visit the hospital to deliver them.

The project fulfills a requirement for Eagle Scout, the highest rank in scouting. But for Karadkar, the project goes beyond that. Inspired by the happiness and sense of belonging he has found through scouting, he hopes to bring that same joy to children facing difficult medical circumstances.

Karadkar is a scout with the Western Los Angeles County Council of Scouting America. Troop 1, [based in Santa Monica](https://www.smdp.com/santa-monica-show-pairs-assemblage-pioneers-with-artists-carrying-the-form-forward/), has members from the Westside.

Karadkar said the path to scouting’s top honor has not been easy.

“The road to Eagle has definitely been tough, but I have loved every second of it,” he said. “I have made countless friends in Troop 1, and the adult leaders have been crucial in making this experience what it is today.”

Next, Karadkar will head to college, where he hopes to keep using the values scouting has taught him “to make a positive impact on everyone I meet.”

For other young people weighing whether to join, his advice is simple: go for it.

“At first, I was hesitant to join, but I wholeheartedly believe Scouting is a truly transformational experience that benefits everyone who participates,” he said.
