*a worldly affair*

*By EMILY SKEHAN Special to the Daily Press*

SM PIER Those looking for a night of song and surf should bring their bouzouki, get their blues on and hula on down to the Santa Monica Pier.

An eclectic evening of world, island and American blues music on the shore awaits concertgoers at the weekly Twilight Dance Series show tonight. Artists David Lindley, Brandi Shearer and John Cruz promise to groove, rock and croon the night away during this week’s free oceanside show.

David “Mr. Dave” Lindley, tonight’s headliner, is an effervescent SoCal native who plays a wide range of styles and instruments from around the globe.

“I’m excited to be on the same bill with him because it’s so rare to see him play” said fellow performer Cruz.

While a teenager, Lindley was a five-time banjo champion at the Topanga banjo and fiddle contest. He moved on to found the psychedelic band Kaleidoscope in 1966, a pioneer group in world music rock.

By the 1970s, Lindley’s distinctive slide guitar style had him accompanying Jackson Browne, a partnership that lasted a decade. He’s also worked with the likes of Bob Dylan, Rod Stewart, Linda Ronstadt and Warren Zevon.

Lindley started a reggae, world and American-influenced sensation with his band El Rayo X in 1981, but has since worked as a solo artist, making music everywhere from Madagascar to Tokyo.

His music is adventuresome and energetic, an electro-acoustic experience that mixes American folk and blues roots with worldly influences from Africa, Ireland, Turkey, Japan and beyond. He plays a wide array of instruments — ranging from an Irish bouzouki to a Hawaiian steel guitar to a Middle Eastern oud. “Mr. Dave” has a wild sense of humor that promises to make tonight’s show a lively, fun-filled event.

Lindley, who has performed in Santa Monica before at McCabe’s Guitar store, will be playing “a pretty eclectic set with elements from around the world,” according to his representative, Michael Morris. “He’s looking forward to playing outdoors and making some more fans.”

Tonight’s concert also features Oahu-born acoustic guitarist Cruz, whose Island-inspired tunes are marked by evocative lyrics and rich vocals. Cruz, who grew up loving music in the island state, entered the music scene on the East Coast, playing in bars, coffee houses and subway stations. His first album “Acoustic Soul” became a Hawaiian pop culture staple, and continues to receive daily radio play.

The 2005 Grammy winner has collected a star-studded list of devoted fans, including Jack Johnson, Trey Anastasio and World Champion surfer Kelly Slater, who invited Cruz to play at the Quicksilver Pro surf contest in France, and featured three of his songs on the surfer’s DVD “Letting go.”

“There is an interesting connection with everyone involved in this show,” said Cruz, noting that he recorded his new album— titled “One of These Days” — in Jackson Browne’s studio, where David Lindley worked with the popular pop singer, and that his guitarist and bass players are close with both Lindley and Browne. “It’s a bunch of friends coming together on the same stage.”

Brandi Shearer, an Amoeba Records-discovered singer and songwriter, is also slated to perform a set of her unique jazz-and blues-influenced American music.

Shearer, whose music is an original, sultry take on traditional American blues, grew up on a small farm in rural Oregon and learned to play guitar at the age of 9\. After spending time in Hungary and performing across Europe, she relocated to San Francisco, where she worked on her 2005 album “Sycamore.”

The concert, located on the west lot of the Santa Monica Pier, begins at 7:30 p.m. The entrance to the pier is at the intersection of Colorado and Ocean avenues, and parking is available at 2030 Barnard Way. However, spaces are limited and attendees are encouraged to walk, bike or take public transit. A free bike valet will be provided.

Bike Attack and the Santa Monica Daily Press are conducting a weekly raffle, giving away a beach cruiser to benefit Heal the Bay. Amoeba records will also give a $100 certificate to one audience member who signs up for their mailing list. Concertgoers can donate cans of food to the Westside Food Bank or make donations to Amoeba’s “Think Green” campaign.
