PICO BOULEVARD — Santa Monica Police officers assisted in the arrest of two men on Wednesday a half-hour after they allegedly tied up a woman and robbed the display home she was house-sitting in an unincorporated area of Los Angeles County, just north of Malibu.

The two suspects — one armed with a gun — broke into a real estate agent’s display home at 4069 Latigo Canyon Road just before 11:30 p.m., and bound the arms of the woman they found inside, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Stephen.

The robbers fled after stealing two televisions, several cell phones and the woman’s Louis Vuitton purse, according to police. The victim was then able to free herself and call for help.

Sheriff’s deputies issued a description of the suspects and their vehicle. At midnight, Santa Monica police along Interstate-10 spotted a car that matched the description and pulled it over in the 3300 block of Pico Boulevard, SMPD Capt. Alex Padilla said Wednesday.

The officers noticed what appeared to be stolen items in the car and called the Sheriff’s Department for assistance. Deputies took the woman who had been tied up to Santa Monica, where she positively identified the men as the robbers, deputies said.

“Sometimes you just get lucky and this was one of those times,” Padilla said. “We were able to assist the Sheriff’s Department, and fortunately, were able to get two dangerous criminals off the streets.”

The stolen property will be temporarily impounded, along with the suspects’ vehicle, as evidence before being returned to its owners, deputies said.

Stephen said that although display-home robberies aren’t common in the Malibu/Lost Hills area, criminals will sometimes go on real estate agents’ tours of display homes to case them, then return later to ransack them.
