UCLA School of Law will host a two-day symposium examining the enduring legal, political and social legacies of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, 25 years after the assaults that killed nearly 3,000 people and reshaped law and society in the United States and abroad.

The symposium, set for Sept. 10-11, 2026, will explore how the legal and political architecture of the post-9/11 era continues to shape contemporary debates about race, migration, surveillance, war, technology, policing and international law, along with the lasting consequences that followed the attacks.

In response to the attacks, the government declared a global "War on Terror" and vowed to strengthen national security, ushering in sweeping expansions of state power that transformed domestic and international law. Those developments reshaped the lives of people in the U.S. and abroad who were targeted by racialized national security policies, immigration enforcement, policing and war, according to organizers.

Legal scholars, practitioners and others from a range of disciplines will discuss those legacies during the event.

The symposium is a collaboration among the law school's Critical Race Studies Program, International & Comparative Law Program, Institute for Technology, Law & Policy, Miñana Family Center for Immigration Law & Policy and The Promise Institute for Human Rights.

The event will be held in Room 1347 on the first floor at 385 Charles E. Young Drive E., Los Angeles.
