Dr. Annie Hernandez of Santa Monica Pet Medical Center and Dr. Madeline Graham of Veterinary House Calls have headed to New Orleans to assist in the plight of animals left homeless by Hurricane Katrina.

Hernandez and Madeline Graham left this past Sunday. They plan to assist local veterinarians, veterinary students and animal control officers in the care and treatment of the many lost and injured pets left homeless by Hurricane Katrina.

“I was glued to the television every night watching the plight of those poor animals,” said Hernandez. Taking all the supplies they could carry in their suitcases, the two veterinarians left Sunday night on the red eye for the Big Easy.

They expect to remain there for at least a week. Local veterinary hospitals, including Pet Medical Center and Animal Surgical and Emergency Center, contributed supplies for the initial journey. Western Medical Supply and Butler Animal Health also are putting together boxes of medical supplies and medicines for shipment this week.
