Two bodies were found on the 1900 block of Ocean this week after officers were called for a wellness check on an elderly couple.

Santa Monica police officers found two 54-year old victims, early Saturday morning after family members said they had been unable to contact the occupants for several days.

Officers entered the unit with help from building management and found a 54-year-old man and woman in an advanced state of decomposition, both with apparent gunshot wounds. A firearm was recovered inside the residence.

Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division are treating the incident as a suspected murder-suicide. SMPD daid the two victims knew each other, and there are no outstanding suspects. Their identities are being withheld pending official identification by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner and notification of next of kin.

Anyone with information about Saturday's incident should contact SMPD Detective Esteban Hernandez at esteban.hernandez@santamonica.gov or the Watch Commander at 310-458-8427.

The Santa Monica Lookout was the first to report the incident.
