DOWNTOWN The LAPD recommends that senior citizens lock their doors and windows and turn up their lights and alarms after a string of robberies targeting elderly females occurred in West Los Angeles.

Five senior citizen homes in the West Los Angles area have been robbed since May 31\. The most recent robbery was on June 18th at 2:30 a.m. The Los Angeles Police Department believes that all the robberies were committed by the same man. It is believed that the suspect would break in through an open window late at night and early morning. He would then awaken the victim to demand jewelry and money, ransack their house, and flee.

The consistent timing of the five robberies — each one occurring within a week of the one before — prompted the LAPD to issue a press release and Los Angeles City Councilman Bill Rosendahl to issue a cautionary note.

“There is no need to create alarm or panic, but we as good neighbors should look out for each other and the safety of our community,” Rosendahl wrote.

The LAPD has a notification listing home invasion robbery preventative measures, like installing an alarm, surveillance cameras and clear lighting. It also includes tips for robbery victims: Immediate contact with the police and acquiescence to all robber demands.

Santa Monica Police Sgt. Renaldi Thruston does not believe that the West L.A. robberies should cause Santa Monica residents undue concern, but he did caution for constant preventative action.

“I know with the summer months its heating up and people have a tendency to leave a window or a door open,” Thruston said. “That’s something we don’t recommend.”
