Enduring months of road construction and long traffic jams, merchants on Main Street in Santa Monica have something to celebrate.

They plan to party on Sunday, June 8, with the help of the Main Street Merchants Association. Dubbed “Makeover Day,” the day will be dedicated to celebrating the completion of the new wastewater conveyance system and the end of the street construction, re-paving and re-striping on Main Street.

Mayor Richard Bloom will be there to issue a proclamation and cut a green ribbon. The Main Street Merchants Association will also take the opportunity to issue certificates of appreciation to retiring SMFD Fire Chief Ettore A. Berardinelli, and to the Big Blue Bus, celebrating 75 years of service.

The ceremony will start at 9:45 a.m. at the Farmer’s Market, just south of Ocean Park Boulevard.

There will be surprise souvenirs for those in attendance. Makeover Day marks the beginning of Main Street Week, which culminates with the Third Annual Main Street Summer SOULstice & Sidewalk Sale, featuring music, an art show, a fashion show, special in-store events, a children’s playground and a Scavenger Hunt with big prizes.

The Scavenger Hunt clue sheets will be available at the farmer’s market on June 8 so hunters can hunt all week. Entry is free. The prizes will be on display in the window of Ashland & Hill, located at 2803 Main St.

The Merchants Association also will announce the winners of its Makeover Day Contest. Main Street Merchants contributing prizes to the contest include Ambiance, Betsy & Tracy, Bey’s Garden, Black + Blue, Colorful Nail, Jeanie Madsen Design/Monkie, Salon Blu, Next, Peiro, Relish, Suji, Gioia, Splash Bath & Body, The End, and Pebbles.
