Santa Monica women are continuing the fight for gender equality and are looking for more residents who wish to do the same.

Since 1981, the Santa Monica Commission on the Status of Women (COSW) has worked to eliminate inequality between the sexes in all areas of life including employment, health, education, political life and law enforcement.

The commission has a vacancy and are seeking persons interested in serving. Candidates must be residents of Santa Monica and must be committed to improving the status of women through advocacy, education and related efforts. Public meetings are held every second Wednesday at 7 p.m.

With a total of nine members, the COSW makes regular recommendations to the Santa Monica City Council and staff on programs and policies affecting women and girls.

The COSW is currently conducting a “Work-Life Survey” to assess how different employment environments affect women’s lives and highlight Santa Monica employers who encourage a positive work-life balance for women. The COSW recently prepared a report on the Status of Women and Girls in Santa Monica that included demographic and social welfare data. The COSW anticipates that the examination will help them better advise the City Council on ways to support women and girls, and address gender inequalities.

On Sept. 26, the COSW is co-hosting a public screening of the HBO film “Iron Jawed Angels” in conjunction with the League of Women Voters.

Application forms and information are available at Santa Monica City Hall, 1685 Main St., information booth, or in the City Clerk’s office, room 102\. People interested can request an application by mail by calling (310) 458-8211, or can apply through the city’s Web site at www.santa-monica.org. Applications must be received in the City Clerk’s office by 5 p.m. Sept. 30 to be considered for the vacancy. Applications are also accepted on an ongoing basis for future vacancies. Only those candidates appointed will be notified.
