The public will soon learn just how healthy the Santa Monica Bay. A one-day conference to examine progress in the restoration of Santa Monica Bay and the challenges ahead will be held on Thursday in the Ahmanson Hall at the Skirball Center, 2701 North Sepulveda Blvd. in Los Angeles.

Results of a multi-year assessment of the health of Santa Monica Bay will be released at the state of the Bay Conference of the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Commission (SMBRC). The SMBRC’s 2004 State of the Bay report evaluates the environmental health of the bay and measures the progress made towards achieving the goals of the Bay Restoration Plan, a comprehensive plan of action for bay protection and management.

Conference presentations and panel discussions will address approaches to and successes in protecting ocean and coastal resources, storm water management, coastal and ocean habitats, wetlands and watersheds, and public education. California Resources Secretary Mike Chrisman and Los Angeles City Councilmember and chair of the SMBRC Jack Weiss are among the experts who will address the more than 250 conference participants at this day-long event. The conference also will showcase how $25 million in Proposition 12 bond funds have been used to support Bay restoration and protection.
