A Santa Monica building has been recognized in a national magazine for its cutting-edge design that makes it the most environmentally friendly structure in America.
Because America’s waters are quickly becoming endangered, Coastal Living magazine begins each year by recognizing people and organizations committed to protecting the shore. The Coastal Living Awards salute those who have a passion to preserve the coast by giving awards in five categories: Design, community development, education, leadership, sea and shore preservation, and tourism. The 2005 Coastal Living Award winners are featured in the January-February issue of Coastal Living.
The Robert Redford Building on Second Street in downtown Santa Monica — known as the “greenest building” in America — offers the latest in environment-friendly design. The building is equipped with solar panels on the roof that provide 20 percent of the building’s energy needs. A basement system uses rainwater to nourish plants and flush restrooms, which conserves drinking water and reduces runoff into the Santa Monica Bay.
